Nishi Pearls is more than a jewelry brand. The world is our oyster – and we take care of our world, environmentally, socially, and economically
A Renewable Gem
Most gemstones are non-renewable resources as their supply is finite. Pearls – unlike any other gem – are organic, created inside a living mollusk, making them the only renewable gemstone. One mollusk can produce multiple gems at a time and takes only a few years to form. Unlike gemstones which are mined under often dangerous conditions, pearls develop beneath the water’s surface amidst plants, animals and an often fragile ecosystem. Pearl farming preserves this natural environment.
Pearls are organic and the only sustainable gem on earth. The production of a pearl not only requires great knowledge, skill and time; but also a thriving marine ecosystem. To produce a quality pearl, the oyster needs to be healthy, living in clean, unpolluted water where there is a lot of oxygen and minerals. Our partners follow environmentally-responsible farming practices to ensure the health of their oysters and the long-term health of their farming operation.
While conserving marine biodiversity, pearl farming also provides increased economic opportunities to remote marine communities. Pearl farming provides more job opportunities to locals. This creates less need to rely solely on fishing income and reduces the risk of overfishing.
Beauty is not only found in how things look, but also in how they are done. We want to empower you to make decisions that will help better our environment together. We do this by tracing our production throughout every step of our supply chain, making sure that our creations are made consciously from start to finish.
We only source conflict-free materials, ensuring that no person was forced to mine a stone in unsafe or illegal working conditions. Ethically sourced goes beyond conflict-free – we support ethical sourcing which ensures that our gemstones are delivered from mines that provide a living wage, safe working conditions, and protect the environment by limiting dangerous chemicals and developing plans for restoring the land after mining is complete. Every detail of our jewelry is a product of conscious practices that assures a peace of mind.
